Recently as part of a Wellness Program at my daughter’s workplace they loaned out pedometers. Of course, I got in on the action (being a daily walker myself) and signed up to borrow one.
Although wearing a pedometer during this month has not been a challenge for me, it has however been a big eye opener. If you are currently not taking the time to go for a daily walk you might not be getting enough movement each day. On average, you might log anywhere from 1,000–3,000 steps in your daily life at work and at home through your daily tasks which are done in spurts.
In order to log 6,000-10,000 steps daily you really need to go for a long walk!
Walking is one of the best overall exercises you can do to improve your health and well-being. It has been proven time and again that a good walk will not only improve your cardiovascular health, it will help you control your weight, and it’s good for the mind. The best part about walking is that it really doesn’t feel like exercise, rather it is just an enjoyable thing to do.
To achieve health benefits from walking, follow these tips:
- your walking pace must be at a moderate intensity
- walk for at least 10 minutes at a time, for 30-60 minutes a day
- walk on most days of the week
Pedometers can be a motivation tool for people wanting to increase their physical activity. Pedometers have been shown in clinical studies to increase physical activity, and reduce blood pressure levels and Body Mass Index.
How long do your walking shoes last before you need to replace them? If you are walking 30-60 minutes a day, you could benefit by replacing your walking shoes every year. It is so worth it!
